RACIAL EQUITY HELPING TEACHER (K-12)

1.    DESCRIPTION OF DISTRICT LEVEL DELIVERY MODEL

The Racial Equity Helping Teacher (K-12) will be a member of the Racial Equity Department and provide supports and professional learning in equity, diversity and inclusion, with special emphasis on racial equity and anti-racism in all schools and school district sites. The Racial Equity Helping Teacher (K-12), in consultation with the Director of Instruction of Racial Equity, will support racial equity, anti-racism and educational justice awareness and understanding for students, staff, and community.  


Key responsibilities of the Racial Equity Helping Teacher (K-12) include:

a.    commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion with special emphasis on racial equity, anti-racism, educational justice, and Truth and Reconciliation;

b.    maintaining an understanding of current issues and trends in equity, diversity and inclusion and research development in the field of racial equity, anti-racism, educational justice and Truth and Reconciliation;

c.    maintaining a current knowledge base in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion with special emphasis on racial equity, anti-racism, educational justice, and Truth and Reconciliation;

d.    maintaining a current knowledge base of Ministry of Education and Child Care programs, curricula and resources;

e.    working as a team with other Helping Teachers and other district department staff;

f.    strong collaboration skills are required as the helping teacher works alongside other helping teachers and various committees and teams to carry out the Ministry of BC Anti-Racism Framework and associated District Anti-Racism Frameworks and Strategic Plans.

g.    providing leadership with integrated curricular approaches to equity, diversity and inclusion with special emphasis on racial equity and anti-racism;

h.    facilitating and providing district in-service and staff training development sessions for teachers, staff, and administrative officers;

i.    collaborating with outside agencies and groups:

j.    chairing and coordinating appropriate committee meetings;

k.    communicating with teachers, administrators, other district personnel, Ministry of Education officials and others regarding District and Provincial programs;

l.    providing budget information;

m.    identifying appropriate learning resources and facilitating the ordering of relevant learning resources for the District and schools;

n.    monitoring-program delivery and emergent needs.


2.    MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a.    valid B.C. Teaching Certificate;

b.    five years of school-based teaching experience; 

c.    minimum of two years’ satisfactory classroom experience (effective from the January 31, 2025 qualification period forward);

d.    participation in collaborative planning and facilitating of professional development activities.


3.    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a.      possession of, or working toward, a Master of Education Degree or equivalent and/or appropriate course work in the areas of equity and diversity;

b.      elementary and/or secondary teaching experience; 

c.      interest or experience in the areas of equity and diversity;

d.      in-depth knowledge of equity and diversity programs and current issues in delivery of service.


4.    REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Racial Equity Helping Teacher is accountable in the execution of the assigned duties to the Director of Instruction, Racial Equity or designate.
